What drives the weather

Weather looks complicated, but it all comes from a handful of simple ideas. Once you see them, you'll start reading the sky instead of just looking at it.

The Sun
Heats the ground unevenly. Warm air rises; cool air sinks. That's it — that's the whole engine.

Water
Evaporates into invisible vapor, condenses into clouds, falls as rain. It moves enormous amounts of heat around.

Rotation
Earth spins. That twists moving air into the curling wind patterns and spiral storms you see on maps.

Geography
Mountains lift air (→ rain on one side, desert on the other). Oceans moderate temperatures.
